3.) It's not as geographically isolated, hot and sprawled out as Phoenix.
4.) You're still 2 hours to the coast (Cambria, Pismo) and an hour from the High Sierras, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon.
5.) It has better quality medical care than either Las Vegas or Reno (Kaiser Permanente, Children's Hospital, Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital, Stanford Health Care).

Yup, plus, if you are reporting to an office in San Jose or San Francisco, you can drive in a couple of times a month if need be
Well, Shazam! What's not to like?

I was also surprised by Fresno's diversity, I was expecting only Mexican/Hispanics and whites but there is a big Pakistani/Indian (punjabi?) presence in my aunts neighborhood.

Yup. It’s part of the conservative handbook. California is bad. Everyone wants to leave. Californians are Communists. On and on. Mostly written by out of state people who have never been here.

Fresno/Clovis.

Pros:

Clovis Unified School District is very strong. All high schools in the district (Clovis North, Clovis West, Buchanan, Clovis, and Clovis east) are very good/excellent, at least by admittedly low Californian standards. University High School (a charter high school on the campus of Fresno State) is nationally ranked.

One can buy a nice house in a nice safe neighborhood in Clovis/ North Fresno (within Clovis Unified boundaries) which will be very affordable by California standards.

Fresno is not far from nice lakes/ Sierra Nevada to the east and Pacific Ocean within 2-3 hours drive to the west.

Fresno State is one of better Cal State campuses.

Cons:

very hot summers (hotter than in Sacramento but sans delta breeze), really bad air quality

small fraction of college educated folks/ fewer cultural opportunities compared to other main Californian centers

no UC campus in Fresno

scarcity of well paying jobs

Fresno Unified School District has mostly weak/ very weak schools

a real chip on shoulder of many proud citizens of Clovis who are trying to prove to the entire world that Clovis/North Fresno is a great place to live

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

All the clickbait "look at how crazy things are getting in CALIFORNIA" articles focus on the most extreme examples (Bay Area, etc) while ignoring the fact that the fastest growing cities are in the inland desert area.

That's one part of the story. The other part is people moving out of expensive areas to less expensive areas within CA. These phenomenon don't live in vacuums, why be dense? Snap out of it, democrats are ruining the state.

It's largely a housing cost issue. What exactly is the solution either political party should come up with to solve that?

Build more houses and skyrises? Great. Now insane traffic and overcrowding just got that much worse.

Give out mortgage assistance and implement drastic rent control measures? Yeah, that won't be popular.

Cool story, bro! Then how come bay area’s and LA’s housing markets are on fire? Even SF is on fire, other than SOMA condos.
