Sacramento, San Joaquin, Fresno, Solano

There are also some that are in the middle, for me, and have both:

Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Orange

The Mojave Desert. The Antelope Valley (think Lancaster/Palmdale and that area) is in LA County and the Mojave Desert. More info in case you're interested.

For me is Marin County. Wonderful views, beaches, mountains, most cities look like Europe!

This is like saying who’s your favorite kid?

Despite the urban sprawl and blight it kinda has to go to Los Angeles County. It has some of the most scenic beaches, 10K ft snow capped mountains, and the desert. Other counties can beat it on all of these individually, but no one has them all at their level.

Using this as a parameter, San Diego County is a close 2nd. It has better beaches and deserts, isn’t as flat within its core, but our mountains fall short.

I know Northern California has some of the most beautiful topography in the country, but no single county has as much diversity as LA or SD County.

There is too much diversity in each county to really say, I think, except in some cases. For example, I would choose Santa Barbara over Ventura, and San Diego over Orange.
The average size of a county in California is much greater than in Texas.

Texas is about 1.7 times the size of California, but it has almost 5 times as many counties.

SD County takes the cake for me.

The beaches get all the spotlight, but that's not even the best part.

The fact that the beautiful Anza Borrego State Park is butted up against Cleveland National Forest is a sight to behold. Just do the drive and you'll see what I mean. You go from a majestic desertscape to Oak & Pine tree-filled mountains in a hop, skip, and a jump. Drastically different climates & ecosystems right next door to each other. It's unreal.

San Diego County truly has it all. Mountains, deserts, forests, sandy beaches & coastline, waterfalls, hills, canyons, swimming holes, seacaves, meadows, rivers, vernal pools, and lagoons.

There's still so much for me to explore, but from what I've seen and experienced has captured my imagination.

I’d take either over LA county. They both include mountain and valley plus rivers and some nice small towns
