California is truly a huge and diverse state. You would get a lot more input if you would do some research (start here on this website, City-Data). Your request is just too vague to get a lot of input and so much of where it is best to live is subjective and personal.
I find that for folks from the east and midwest it is difficult to wrap one's mind around how large the state truly is and how varied our weather and topography is. San Diego is truly a great city with mild climate with lots to do. But...there is so much more to choose from here. Age specific questions are important too. Gosh! We have so many cities with so many different personalities and climates and assests! Explore!

I'm sorry, but I don't get it. How can your two favorite cities be SLO and Fresno? That doesn't even make sense to me.
