Actually, it is a surprise. Most of us who are actually affected by this have been continuously discouraged by Schwarzennegger's vetoes of the state senate and assembly's attempts to pass gay marriage laws. And, because six of the seven judges on the California Supreme Court were Republican appointees, it's especially surprising. Most of us thought we would be waiting for many years to share in some basic civil liberties.

This is an important day for many of us.

Next step: they should lift the ban on the ancient Bible-approved practice of polygamy.

Didn't the people pass a proposition banning it? Makes me wonder why anyone bothers to vote on anything. If you don't vote the left way, it gets overturned.

Voting doesn't mean much of anything anymore.

The Supreme Court overturned the Knight Initiative declaring it unconstitutional. The "people" have voted for some pretty heinous laws in our country's history. We're fortunate to have educated people who can carefully consider our laws--and especially our constitution--so that our basic rights aren't infringed upon.

I'm amazed at how many hateful people there are here. Does it really impact you that much for us to have some basic civil rights? Does it really harm you if we can now legally visit one another in the hospital if the other is dying? Does it have any impact on you for us to be legally recognized as partners by the state of California? I'm so deeply saddened and sickened that there are still so many people out there with such hatred toward us. Attitudes like these are what breed violence toward people like me.

How unfortunate that a site I visit to research places to live safely with my partner has proven to be yet another unsafe location for me to visit. This is sad.

2norcalgirls - Some people will do whatever they can to be hateful and uphold their beliefs of what is right. Don't let these folks change your way of life or your right to post on this site.

Gay people getting married doesn't hurt anyone. God wouldn't want it any other way.

Are you talking about the courts that enforced racial segregation? Or the courts that said its OK for the government to take one person's land and give it to another? Yeah, the courts sure know what's best all the time.
