Re: UCLA vs. Cal

UCLA Alums give back more $$$ to the school which affects the rankings. It also has a top-notch health system connected to the university unlike Cal (just imagine if Berkeley and UCSF merged). I tend to find the UCLA community has more of a sense of belonging than Berkeley - this element appeals to people as well.

Nowhere in that article did that counselor state that students could get into UC Riverside then with a GPA lower than 3.0. I think you're extrapolating from your own experience there.

USNews needs to move rankings around to keep the whole survey relevant, but would agree that after Berkeley and UCLA, the others aren't well enough known east of the Rockies for anyone to know the difference between Santa Barbara and Merced.
Most of the UC's focus more on academics and not so much sports. Interesting that both Santa Barbara and my alma mater of Riverside both had football back in the day before budget cuts got rid of them (not sure if Davis still has it?). Butch Johnson is a famous UCR alumnus that made a controversial Super Bowl catch to lead the Dallas Cowboys to victory.

UCLA has Westwood...people want to go someplace where there’s something besides just the school.”
I do recall one "drug dealer" type student in my dorm at UC Riverside way back on the 80's when they still had affirmative action and you could only apply to ONE UC....probably a few like that at most colleges. Most students had high level stats and were constantly studying in one of the two libraries (Tomas Rivera (main library) or Bio-Ag library)..the dealer, and party types mostly dropped out quickly on the fast paced quarter system schedule. You were lucky to get in there waltchan with that low of a GPA (2.5)...my test scores were similar to yours (top third on ACT but not top 10 percent) but with a 3.8 GPA...squeaked in to the brutal Bio-Med program...switched to Business Administration second year and never looked back. I wouldn't be too salty about UCSB rejection either (same thing at LA for me too as a Bio major)...not much difference from UCR undergrad and Santa Barbara... was a bigger party school...know many that dropped out because of that. UC Riverside has always been a very good school with that"inland" location that won't faze true Highlanders...one of the fastest growing UC's for a reason with a personal touch/ more collaborative education (barely recognize the college now) along with the first new Medical School in California in 50 years. The campus is positioned very well to continue onward and upward in a big way. Enjoyed my time at UCR and received a solid education...go Highlanders!!

UC Riverside's chancellor, Kim Wilcox, states he wants over 40,000 students in the campus. Which means, UCR's future US News & Report ranking may one day beat UC Davis as the new better UC campus:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/care...?ocid=msedgntp

"UC Riverside Chancellor Kim Wilcox said his campus has grown by 24%, from 21,000 to 26,000, since he arrived in 2013, but he would like to see it reach the level of at least 40,000 — the range of UCLA and UC Berkeley. He said increasing tenure-track faculty has been a top priority, which has helped the campus double its research funding and provide students with access to top scholars.

But Riverside is "woefully behind" in adding more staff, he said. The campus, which educates a high share of underserved students, lacks many essential services at the same level of its peers, such as transfer student support, counseling and academic advising.

Unlike UCLA and UC Berkeley, which lack space to expand their physical footprint, UC Riverside still has room to grow and is adding housing complexes and classrooms.

"We'll grow as fast as resources allow us to grow," Wilcox said.

Thanks for the article...funding at UCR is an issue compared to the flagships of LA and Berkeley, but it should grow right along with the ever rising campus...luckily they didn't eliminate ALL sports at UC Riverside on that ill proposed initial budget plan! Just imagine if UCLA or Berkeley were to remove ALL sports...riots would occur on campus (maybe not at Cal though)!

Will be tough for UC Riverside to overtake Davis in the rankings, but it is possible since the rapidly rising school is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the entire United States with the first new California Medical School in 50 years. It has the capacity for 40,000 students unlike some of the other maxxed out UC's (Santa Cruz being one)...just hope it can retain its personal touch/more collaborative education at that size which will be challenging.

The Chancellor Kim Wilcox has done an overall very good job at UC Riverside...number one in the nation on Social Mobility again on US News...third year in a row now. One of the fastest growing UC's for a reason. The campus is positioned very well to continue onward and upward...go Highlanders!!
