About 20 years ago when I was applying to universities, this was the UC ranking by US News & Report at that time (in-order):

2002:

1. Berkeley
2. Los Angeles
3. San Diego
4. Santa Barbara
5. Irvine
6. Davis
7. Santa Cruz
8. Riverside
9. Merced

4. Santa Barbara
5. Irvine
6. Davis
7. Santa Cruz
8. Riverside
9. Merced
CORRECTON (after consulting these website pages using variable estimates):

2022 (today):

1. Los Angeles
2. Berkeley
3. Santa Barbara
4. San Diego
5. Irvine
6. Davis
7. Riverside
8. Merced
9. Santa Cruz

2032 (forecast):

2. Santa Barbara
3. Berkeley
4. Irvine
5. San Diego
6. Merced
7. Riverside
8. Davis
9. Santa Cruz

By 2042, I think UC Santa Barbara will dethrone UC Berkeley as the new #2 best UC campus. Santa Barbara is currently the fastest-growing ranked UC campus, since 1990, when it once peaked with a 85% acceptance rate in 1993, and it was ranked below Irvine too. Not anymore today...

By 2042, I think UC Davis will move down two places and become the 2nd worst UC campus, once ranked #3 best in 1990. Davis is currently the fastest-declining ranked UC campus, because the UC regents want to invest more in UC Merced for first-time generation Hispanic students, eliminate poverty, and the land location is centrally better than UC Davis where it is at. Merced is closer to Yosemite National Park. Merced will also have a high-speed rail train stop, while Davis won't get one. It's also much easier to build new buildings in Merced than in Davis.

Bottom line, southern California UC campuses will continue to see upsides, while northern California UC campuses will be seeing downgrades. This is due to birth rate difference. San Francisco city has a very-low birth rate. Riverside/San Bernardino will continue to have a modest birth rate.

If the conversation I had was indicative of what the student population looks like, I can see why it has faltered so much in rankings.
How long had he been at the university? Maybe he was in his sophomore year, still deciding on a major. UC Santa Cruz was the "hippie school" in its early years. It probably still attracts that type of student. I'd heard they'd added a good IT tech program, among others.

When I was in high school--1970s--UC Santa Cruz still definitely attracted a tree-hugger type, but a brilliant one. You had to have top grades and scores to be accepted there.

The only thing I would personally disagree with is putting so much importance on local birth rates. Students in California don't necessarily choose or get accepted to only their local UC campus. When I went to Berkeley in the 90s, there were tons of people from Southern California, and tons of Northern Californians attended UC campuses in Southern California too. People choose these schools all over the state. And don't forget the huge percentage of international students as well.

You can't say that about any of the other UC Colleges.
So true! And down here in San Diego, we are blessed to have the only other UC Davis veterinary clinic in the country. If our dog ever gets cancer, that's where we are taking her. Hands-down the most reputable clinic for specialized disease in Southern California.

Public schools are always going to do more poorly in the US News rankings due to lower alumni giving rates. Many of the UC's are every bit as good as some of the Ivy's or other institutions, but aren't the attractors of trust fund babies.

You got lucky to get in with a 2.55 GPA...that probably won't ever happen again. Don't you need at least a 3.0 minimum GPA for UC schools now? Most UC schools now have 4.0 plus average GPA's...getting tougher each and every year.

I went in the 80's when you could only apply to ONE UC and they still had affirmative action. Wasn't sure which one to pick as a Biology major initially with a 3.8 GPA and mediocre test scores (top third on ACT but not top 10 percent), picked UCLA out of peer pressure but rejected,...redirected to Santa Cruz (no grades/far away/no Bus Admin. Major)), or Riverside which had Biology and Business Administration (Berkeley only other one to have it back then). Also played tennis, but no scholarship, so that was out...Bio-Med was brutal...switched to Business Administration and never looked back. Had the right fit...Enjoyed my time and received a solid education at UC Riverside.

Personally I think all UC schools will continue to rise...some will go up, some down (like UCSC now) with lack of growth, housing issues, etc that will eventually be worked out. Rankings are important, but major, fit, research opportunities, and other variables are as well. You can really do well at any UC Regardless of ranking...the best public system in the world.
