Work is temporarily taking me to California for about 5 months.

Do I have to register my car there as a temporary resident?

Heard that you can get in trouble if you don’t but not sure if that’s accurate.

Technically I bet you're supposed to, but I think you'll be fine here without one for 5 months. I think yes "technically" you can get into trouble, but the state has its head shoved so far up its own a$$ that they won't have any idea you're here.

Your car needs to be registered in California when you become a permanent resident. Temporary residents just need current registration and insurance from whatever their home state is.

College kids, temporary workers, etc. do this all the time with no problem.

This makes sense.

Right now you can commit almost any crime here and never "get in trouble".

Could you expand on that please? Is crime rate up? Anything to be concerned about?

I'm sure Mike is talking in the general sense, but with regards to car registration, lately I've noticed a significant number of cars with outdated tags. It is now taboo in places like the Bay Area for cops to enforce laws, especially traffic laws. Thus, people can get away with figurative murder (and maybe literal murder at the rate things are going). Your mileage may vary outside of the Bay Area.

Thank you. Good to know.

OP, don't do anything to put your name on the state's radar, like registering your car in-state for a temporary stay. Once you're in the datebase, they may come after you for state income taxes, even if you're gone by then. The state is very aggressive in going after people it thinks are residents, for income taxes.

You won't be a resident. You'll be "just passing through", basically. Got it? You have been warned.
