Merced is still cheap.
Chico and fontana arent priced too badly.
Visalia has potential(it needs to kick out the republicans from office asap)

Jail. Many amenities. Except it’s a potentially dangerous neighborhood with nothing fun to do.

Depends on your definition of “fun.” Eh?

In an old VW camper van. You just have to move around a lot so you don’t busted by the cops. Near some trees and bushes preferably where you can do your business when nature calls.

Also, if people will be working from home, they need to make sure their internet needs are met in any low budget town!

LOL, if you can afford an "old VW camper van/bus" you can afford a place MUCH better than Trona. (Altho, I DO like Trona due to their off-road availability. ) And the place looks like another planet.

"Cheap" is up for debate and I question those figures in the first post as far as them being below the US average for housing. Homes in most of the Central Valley run about $250 to $300 a square foot. New construction in most of the valley is anywhere from $425,000 to $550,000 for an average home. Homes in many places in the South, Texas, Florida and Midwest are $150 to $200 a square foot.

Where’s the cheapest place to live in California?

Skid Row in Los Angeles???

There are thousands of people living there who have no mortgage, no rent, and no utilities! I'd say that's pretty cheap.

I lived in Des Moines, Iowa for a year. There is no place in California even remotely like the Midwest. The San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys are totally different in topography, climate, farming, home styles and ethnic and racial makeup. Anyway, who's to say San Diego is more like California than anywhere else is the state? Its nothing like up north. Its nothing like the vast majority of this state whether it be the Central Valley, Sierra Nevada, San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, the North Coast. Southern Californians have the most myopic view of California like their little corner is all there is and the rest is just some fringe area that's not really part of it.
