I've heard it isn't going to get any better as the cost of repairing roads with asphalt should increase as the price of oil increases.

Europeans, on average, pay 2.3 times what the average U.S. resident pays in fuel taxes. There's no free lunch. If fuel taxes are low, people complain about the condition of the roadways -- maintenance and repair has to be deferred because the revenue isn't there. If there is enough revenue to keep things up to schedule, then people complain about high fuel taxes. Which do you want?

We are pricing the cost of asphalt for a driveway to the home we are building and we were told that the price has dropped by 50% in the last few months. Don't ask me why... maybe someone else can explain it.

absolutly correct you are , steve. Gas is much more expensive than in the US. Besides, taking the example of France, most of their equivalent of the interstate system is made of toll expressways : it cost 0 € to the tax payers in so far has it was entirely funded by private companies and those companies get back their money with the toll revenues. And maintenance is perfect : smooth pavements, magnificient markings and road signs, quick and efficient assistance...paid by the tolls, by the road users.

Did you know, the SR91 tollways in Orange County are managed by Cofiroute, one of the French leading tollroad operator.
