Glendale, Burbank, Studio City or Sherman Oaks.

I noticed that nobody has mentioned Toluca Lake. Though it is technically a part of Los Angeles, it sits right on the border with Burbank and is right next to Warner Bros. studio. I lived there for about year ( though a few years back) and it was great. Good shopping, restaurants, and other amenities that you can easily walk to. Lots of rentals. Given how things have changed since I last lived there I don't know if you can find something to rent in your price range but it is definitely worth checking into.

Glendale...well I grew up there so I would agree that it's a nice place, though not quite as nice or as quiet as when I was a kid. Most of Burbank is nice, though I think the area around Glenoaks Blvd. and the Media Center mall is probably the best. La Canada, La Crescenta, and Montrose are wonderful places, especially Montrose, but I think trying to commute from up there down to the studios would become a pain.
