Actually, the article is pointing out that the University of California has admitted a record number of Californians and far fewer out-of-state students. From your link:

Actually no, it’s not puzzling. Not anymore. After all this time, with so many threads started about race … it has become quite obvious what’s going on behind the ‘focus.’

So we can assume more dumbing down of the UC system since admissions are not based on actual test scores but based on what color of skin you have. God I am so glad i wont have to interview let alone hire these highly qualified individuals when the graduate with a diploma on basket weaving or political science or communtication!

I graduated from high school in the 70s, and my alma mater is a UC that isn’t UCB nor UCLA. One of my college roommates (also a fraternity brother of mine) was working on something at the NASA Ames rResearch Center when he was 16. He also played football in high school. His mother couldn’t conceive. He and his sister were adopted (from different families). His parents were smart people and nurtured his intellect (his mother was the daughter of a judge, and his father was ranked by some group as one of the top ten engineers in the world in his particular discipline). Sans any test prep programs, he got a 1580 on the SAT and a perfect 800 on the level 2 math achievement test. He also got accepted to his desired programs at Stanford and at Harvey Mudd. However, he picked our UC because of a specific focus we were known for within his desired program, a focus that particularly piqued his interest.

Ruth, re your note on your rep, the test prep business actually did exist in the 70s. There are two ‘granddaddies’ in the business, Kaplan and The Princeton Review. The Princeton Review didn’t start until 1981, but Kaplan started in 1938, and expanded beyond NYC in 1970, with 70 centers (around the country) by 1975.
