Me and my best friend are planning a three week trip to california this summer and according our plans we will spend the 4th of July in/around Fresno. Now even though we are Dutch, we heard that the 4th is like THE national holiday over there, so we would like to get a tast on a typical 4th of July celebration.

Where should we go in Fresno. Are there any good events to go to, any fireworks?

Please help us out...

Not to bash Fresno, but why would someone PLAN to spend time there from out of state? My colleagues dread going there for even work-related (can't get out of it) reasons - doesn't seem likely that someone would elect to spend time there unless they had family/friends already there. If at all possible, perhaps come down to LA area for fireworks on the 4th - there's a whole lot going on all over the area.

also realize it will probably be at least 100+ degrees outside that time of year. Combine that with the horrible air quality, it's really not a place people visit.

My first choice would be to spend the 4th of July at the Fresno Grizzlies, the highest level (AAA) affiliate of baseball's San Francisco Giants. Players move between the two teams all year. The Grizzlies are playing Sacramento that night which is the affiliate of the Oakland A's. So baseball, hot dogs, and fireworks.

The next best choice is in Clovis, a Fresno suburb. The Freedom Fest fireworks display at the High School football stadium is a good example of traditional Americana.

You can also go to Wild Water Adventures in Clovis, a water park. Spend the day on the water slides and wave pool then stay for music and fireworks.

It was 100 degrees in Anaheim a couple of weeks ago and Fresno was only 90. It depends upon the weather patterns.

Typically Fresno only sees 35 days a year over 100, most of that in August.

A few reasons for Fresno...
We only have three weeks and arrive and depart from Los Angeles, the 4th is exactly in the middle of our trip, during that week we will be visiting sequoia, kings canyon and Yosemity. So we don't really have the time to drive somewhere else.... Unless, maybe you have a suggestion on a nice city to go to with a maximum of a, lets say two hour drive from Fresno.

Also, our accomodations for that night can't really be changed. All the campingsites are fully booked round the fourth, so we will be spending those nights with someone my friend knows near Fresno.

So it's not like we want to see Fresno. It's that we are in that area and want a tast of what the fourth of july is like, and the nearest city is Fresno...

Thanx everyone for their suggestions... Maybe we will go to the baseball game, could be fun to watch a real game sometime. Never saw a baseballgame..

They used to do fireworks at Bass Lake. You could look into that. It is in Madera County, I think. It might not be quite as hot up there.

You will LOVE Sequoia/King's Canyon national park - I've been there many times. Don't forget to check out the Crystal Cavern tour it is breathtakingly beautiful. I fully understand why you will be wanting to have the fourth in Fresno - I hope you enjoy it, but keep in mind that if it is not what you expect, you still have to come see the fourth in person somewhere in So Cal in the future because there are quite a few excellent fireworks shows here each year.

Welcome to CA!

I don't know the OPs age or knowledge of US music.

But I did find out the the 70's Latin Funk/Rock band WAR is playing at one of the Fresno-area casinos on the 4th of July. WAR is best known for songs like "Cisco Kid", "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends".
