Do not move to Los Angeles unless you are incredibly wealthy, since the crime problems and gangs are widespread throughout the entire L.A. basin. Only the cocooned enclaves of the rich, separated by gates, mountain roads or private beaches afford a safe, hence "nice" quality of life.

If you have over a million dollars to spend on a house there, try Brentwood, parts of Santa Monica, parts of West L.A., parts of Mar Vista, parts of Baldwin Hills, and West Hollywood. The last two offer beautiful houses but with a demographic spike, the first towards African-Americans and the last towards gay people.

If you have over two or three million dollars for a house, you can try Beverly Hills, Westwood, Santa Monica closer to the beach, Palos Verdes, Pasadena, Malibu area, and the Hollywood Hills. Five million gets you into Holmby Hills, Beverly Hills bigger estates, and Malibu on the beach.

You haven't specified what you're looking for in your relocation. Perhaps posters here can be of more help when you do. What don't you like about AZ, and what do you think you'll find different in So. Cal? It isn't considered rude here to ask about what you can afford in housing, since that's the all important entry to whatever neighborhood within which you can live.

Relocation research to Southern Calif. should include checking out San Diego, the Orange County and San Diego County coastal cities, and Ventura county. Bypass L.A. unless you have a specific reason to be there, such as a settled group of friends or family to buffer you and acclimate you to safer areas, you're in the entertainment business, or you've been offered a job that pays really, truly, enormously well.

If you have $500K to spend on a home you can look inland around San Diego for an older 70's or 80's house. I believe it is in Rancho Bernardo that homes are somewhat affordable and it is a nice area. You can also look at townhomes. I am from Ontario, but left 30 years ago and would not be able to move back. It is just an extension of L.A now. Claremont is a college town and it is very quaint, but spendy. We left CA for AZ two years ago and would not move back for anything. Best of luck to you in your search.

What's your income?! How far are you willing to commute?! Do you desire summer temps of mid 90's or high 70's?

Southern California has alot of Nice and Safe Areas to live in,but it will most likely have a much higher price tag compared to the same type of area in Arizona.

You should visit and tour Southern California,so you'll be able to decide whether Southern CA is for you.
