What line of work are you in? Do you want a big city? Small town? Mountains nearby? Beaches nearby? Do you need to be near an airport? Any places you already know you don't like?

Maybe the Sacramento area - perhaps east of Sacramento in the foothills. It's getting so in this area you might be able to get a house for about $300K or less.

Sacramento is in a central location and about 90 minutes to San Francisco and about 2 hours or so to the Sierra Nevada Mtns and Lake Tahoe to the east.

The Sacramento option is a good one. As far as housing for that price, other options are Chico, Redding, Fresno/Clovis, and Visalia.

Sacramento, Chico, Redding, Fresno/Clovis, and Visalia all have nice areas with homes in your price range. All are also good family towns.
