What the lefties will never understand is that if you confiscate all the assets that "rich" people own it would not run the government for long. What you really need from the rich is for them to continue to produce wealth and then tax them at reasonable rates.

So how do you encourage them to work hard and earn more tax money for the state? Certainly not by confiscating their income with ridiculous tax rates. Take California's top rate of 10.3%, add the top federal rate of 41% (including medicare tax) and you've got a rate of 51%. Then add the taxes the top earners pay for social security, property tax, licenses, fees, taxes on everything they purchase and their real taxes approach 60% of what they earn. Why should someone invest their money and start new businesses (employing people) when all they get to keep is 40% (or less).

Sock it to smokers with high taxes and what will happen? Fewer smokers or so the lefties hope. Sock it to high earners and what do you suppose will happen?
