Many people want to or actually are moving away from California these days (myself included). What do you think the five most moved-away-to states and/or cities are from Californians?

Here are my guesses:
1. Portland, Oregon
2. Austin, Texas
3. Seattle, Washington
4. Colorado [front range]
5. Hawaii (#1 for baby boomers)

and as a bonus, places CA'ans DON'T move to:
1. Michigan
2. Louisiana
3. Iowa
4. Kansas
5. Dakotas

The biggest states people here are moving to are Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Texas, Colorado and Oregon.

California actually has a net gain of migrants from New York, Connecticut, Illinois, Hawaii, Massachusetts and some others.

Although I'm pretty sure the current economic conditions around the country have slowed the number of people moving out significantly.

If I were to move away from California, I'd want to move to Washington (Seattle for the rain), New York, Maine, or London (UK). But I'm young and not ready to pick a place to settle, so any of those places would be temporary; ultimately I want to settle down in California to raise family. It's where I grew up and where my and my husband's families are.

That census info that Charles sent was really great. Of course, things have no doubt changed greatly since 2000. The census in 2010 will be pretty telling.

Phoenix and Las Vegas should definitely be added to that list.I would suspect they are the top two cities former Californians go over any other place.

In Texas, I'd say Houston trumps Austin. There are subdivisions of former Californians in Houston.

Ugg... why?
Houston's not much better, those are all the biggest and most obnoxious cities East of CA but west of Chicago.

Phoenix and Vegas are the closest major metropolitan areas to CA, especially Southern Ca, so it makes sense they would be the top recipients on ex-Californians. You're within a 4-6 hour drive from either city in Southern CA as opposed to a 20 hour drive to TX cities. There's a much bigger connection between Southern NV and AZ to CA than any other state.
