The leaves on the trees in my neighborhood start turning yellow in October, starting falling off in late October and into November and are bare by late November.

I'm busy sweeping sycamore-tree leaves every year starting at about this time. Is that because it's Fall? In southern CA Fall is more subtle than what I hear it's like in the midwest or on the east coast. In S CA, the air becomes more crisp and the temperatures are noticeably more pleasant than the oppressive August heat and humidity. The days get shorter.

Yes, Fall is when the Santa Ana Winds blow, we have some of our hottest, driest weather, and the wildfires burn.

The leaves don't fall in Fall. They're viciously ripped from the trees by the Santa Ana Winds, then blown out to sea.

I agree with the sentiment that we do have autumn in SoCal, it's just far more subtle than in other places. There are some trees which lose their leaves, the days grow shorter, the temperatures start to dip, and rain becomes a possibility. We also have the chance for getting Santa Ana winds, which bring the wildfires and desert heat.

If you see someone wearing shorts and a sweatshirt it's fall. Jeans = winter.

My vineyard has all the leaves fall off every winter.

What is Fall? The only tree that we had in our yard that lost any leaves was a peach tree and the first time it did that I thought it was dead. Kind of sad since I grew the tree from a seed. Who wants to see a bunch of dead trees all winter?

I do remember a friend that moved out to our area. He was from an area that had something called seasons. Anyway, him and his wife would put oranges in the stockings along with candy. He always said it was a treat that his parents gave him when he was little. I thought that was funny to be doing it with his kids because they were growing up in California. if he wanted an orange he could go out into the back yard and get one. All of our yards had orange trees.

Hmmm... no wonder I got crazy looks when I went out to LA in January and wore shorts and a tank top! I left Indiana in 3 feet of snow and -6 degrees, when I got to LA it felt hot, but everyone was wearing long sleeves etc. It was summer as far as I was concerned!

Gosh, I'm sure there is something called fall, but today is October 1st, and it was 102 degrees today. Literally . But yes, it will eventually be NotSummer, but in terms of the OPs question about theree being 4 actual seasons, I'm gonna have to say no to that one. A few years ago a flew to D.C. in October and *gasp* the view from the plane as we made our descent took my breath away. Now that.....that was fall. The whole weekend was amazing, with a nice crisp breeze, and needing a light sweater, and the light hitting at that very east coast angle. It was a totally different experience than SoCal. If you've only ever been here, there's no way to describe those differences, but I definitely recommend everyone experiencing it for themselves!

Yes, people go to the Northeast to just look at all the beautiful trees & great cool weather. Truly worth the trip.

Be patient because we may experience our first rainfall this weekend & it will definitely cool down nicely [how does maximums in the 60's sound?
