How can that shopping center be called a mall? is the mall enclosed, and does it look like an enclosed mall or open-air mall?

The shopping center has only 24 tenets, and it has very few clothing stores and it doesnt even have 2 clothing department stores.

I think Madonna Plaza in San Luis Obispo, Ca is more like a mall. It has a food court, a grocery store, 2 clothing department stores (sears-75,000sq. ft. and macy's-63,000sq. ft.) five clothing stores, six big-box stores, and a mix of smaller local and chain boutigue stores.

Sequoia Mall in Visalia is an enclosed shopping center of 500,000 sq ft.

Tenants include Sears, Mervyns, a 12 screen theater, Borders, Longs Drugs and other retailers. It used to include Ross and some other clothing stores but they have shifted to other centers.

Sequoia Mall has struggled in recent years due to new competition located 1/2 mile south at the newer Packwood Creek retail center and the revamping of Visalia Mall 1 mile north.

LOL, yeah I know.

As I think about it though, the city is probably confusing 2 shopping centers in Visalia.

Sequoia Mall has department stores, a theater, and other retail.

Sequoia Plaza is the old Costco center (Costco moved to another location).

But I'm afraid the city may have Macys on his mind too much if he's typing that it is at Madonna Plaza.

Yes both were built as enclosed malls.

In fact, if my memory serves me correctly the Visalia Mall originally was called Visalia Fair Mall. When it opened in 1964 it was the first enclosed mall in California.

Yes both are currently enclosed malls.

But as I said, Sequoia Mall is struggling with many vacant storefronts in the mall right now. The Mervyns closure in a few months will add to that.

The Sequoia Mall is now owned by a 50/50 partnership of Schottenstein Stores and Kimco. They also purchased the Mervyns building a few months back and most of the outlying pads. The main piece they do not own right now is the Sears building.

The partnership is now in the preliminary stages of making plans to redo the property.

The gossip is that they will first move the theater into a new building outside the enclosed mall building. They will then try to line up a new anchor retailer to join Sears and the theater and then remake the complex.

Rumor is that the plan will be to change the mall to a mixed-use outdoor center which will include condos/apartments along with retail and restaurants.

There are rumors, that the tenet looking into Mervyn's location in San Luis Obispo is Macy's. Macy's will probably use the same plans they did to replace Bon Marche with the Mervyn's location. Kohl's they say will likely replace Gottschalks if Gottschalks ever goes.
