Hi,

I will move to CA (near Sillicon Valley) soon and I need a new job. Where is the best place to find the job listing regarding to software engineer? How is the market? Thanks.

-Joe

Layoffs everywhere and they're going to be accelerating in the next month. IBM, Sun, Yahoo, Ebay, KLA-Tencor all announced big chunks of layoffs recently. They're expecting more to be announced at Apple, Sony, and others.

And they'll hopefully deport all the guest workers who shouldn't be here in the first place.

Hey Joe,

Here are two questions for you:

1. Why now? Can you wait for all the dust to settle first in this unstable market? Why not stay where you are until things stabilize a bit more.

2. Why the Silicon Valley? It seems like many new grads or other starry eyed software engineers want to move to the SV to hit the jackpot. Unfortunately this attitude can backfire on the area and you can have a lot of talented individuals out of work especially when the layoffs occur in times like these.

It might be a good time to explore the road less traveled and wait out the storm somewhere else for now.

Just my 2c,

Derek

Think about the impact of what is written in the text below (and remember, Huntsville population is about 1/4 the size of the San Fernando Valley). This is a big deal.

"The [Redstone] arsenal [in Huntsville] is set to receive almost 5,000 jobs when several D.C.-area commands relocate here by 2011. Myles, along with other community and military bigwigs, talked to the legislators about the importance to the whole state that North Alabama be ready for the influx of Department of Defense workers - along with another 5,000 defense contractors - and the families they bring with them.
The new jobs, made possible by a law recommended by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, will bring in an additional $7 million in salaries to the arsenal, which translates into an additional $56 million in state income taxes that the Legislature will appropriate to projects across Alabama.
Nearly $500 million more is being spent for local contractors to construct the necessary buildings for the new Army commands coming to the arsenal, which include the Missile Defense Agency, Space and Missile Defense Command, Army Materiel Command, Army Security Assistance Command and Rotary Wing Center.
The average BRAC-related salary, Myles told the group at the dinner at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, is $80,000, and the influx of these new jobs and construction constitute the single largest economic boon in state history."
