I am located in California and am on unemployment. Can anyone answer questions below?

Questions:
1- I was offered a relatively low paying part time job. How will that effect my unemployment checks and status? For example, lets say I make $300/week from unemployment and the part time job will pay me $60/week. Will they just subtract that amount from the 300?

2- My hours will vary from week to week. Will that effect anything?

3- Will the unemployment office contact this new employer? If so, will they be asking if the job offered me more hours or full time?

4- If I need to take a "vacation" for a week to see my grandmother who is not well (out of state), what happens to my unemployment check and status if I:

A) Follow all of the rules and report the vacation to edd, will they just subtract the time that I was gone from my check and then continue the checks as normal?

B) Don't follow the rules, don't report the vacation. Keeping in mind - I will be missing days of my new part time job, will the EDD call and check with that job why I didn't work that week? (I'm usually a by the book gal, but everyone I know suggests to do this).

do you have an EDD handbook? it would answer your questions. their website would answer as well. when i worked temp jobs, some of the amount (they allow you to earn a small amount) was subtracted from my checks. the varying hours would not be any different. going on vacation while stating you were available for work is called fraud, although i'm not a lawyer and that is not legal advice.

I forgot about the handbook... Thanks for the tip. Very helpful. So that definitely helps me answer my questions about how part-time work will effect my check/status.

Still wondering if EDD contacts the employer... and

Still need help with the "vacation" question. Really need to know how reporting a vacation will effect my EDD status. If it is as simple as I won't get paid for that week, that's fine - I will make ends meet somehow. But if the EDD is going to discontinue my claim, that's another thing.....

i don't know if they call or not. but i'm pretty sure just stating you were not available that week would just mean no benefits that week. the whole thing is such a catch 22. i would turn down jobs with low pay but then never found one that did pay. and where i was last, the main employment agency blackballed me for turning down a low wage job and would then never call me again. had i known, i would have taken the crap. but oh well, too late now!

I worked for EDD for about 1 year as a developer on their Unemployment Insurance application.
As long as you are still looking for job while you are visiting your grandmother is fine. Like send out resume and talk to recruiters and companies ...

Thanks for all the posts -

Looking in the fine print of the EDD handbook on page 15: "Was there any reason (other than sickness or injury) that you could not have accepted full-time or part-time work each workday? ....[If you couldn't work because] you were on vacation, ...you will be scheduled for a telephone interview to determine your continued eligibility for benefits."

Is this the case? So I'm gone for one week, report that I'm gone, still look for work via web and phone.... and they will still need this phone interview and review my eligibility??

Has anyone actually gone through this process? ... can give me an example of what happened?

If you are on a state EDD claim you get your $300 minus your income, there is a formula for it but you will get more than your $300 for that week when it is totaled. They want to encourage you to work even if a small bit. I think that you will likely get your whole $300 if you only earn $60.

A federal extension I believe you do not get any of your claim for any payment in weeks worked.

Help! I just moved to Sac. I was down sized. My old employeer never payed unemployment insurence for me. I filed for unemployment, but because I was moving and denied, I didn't think to look for work. EDD said that they would look into it for me. Just recieved a continued claim form and it says that I have to list applications. I spent most of last week on the phone trying to find out why I was denied! Now what do I do?

Just give EDD copies of your pay stubs and all will be ok.
