I am looking for a place in California. I want it to be on the beach with shopping centers like the promenade on 3rd street in Santa Monica with hip stores. Need a Best Buy, Target or Walmart there and a McDonalds. I need it to have trendy condos and an upscale city-life? Any places?

Am I missing something?

California? check
Beach? check
3rd Street Promenade? check
Generic shopping? check
Overpriced (hip and trendy) shopping? check

So why not Santa Monica itself? Or, did the five McDonalds there close?

I want more of a smaller town. And Charles, I find your sarcasm very funny. So funny, I just used sarcasm.

Santa Barbara is a good suggestion. It will be hard to find "upscale city-life" in a "smaller town", of course.

I would suggest Santa Barbara, Malibu, Palo Alto, La Jolla, and Huntington Beach.

Yoy can drive to the Pacific in less than 10 min. from SLO. It's close enough.

Santa Barbara comes close, I agree, but it lacks the Big Box stores the OP wants. Most Santa Barbarans drive to Ventura County for that kind of shopping. There isn't a Walmart or Target at all in Santa Barbara. Not sure about Best Buy, but I think the closest is Oxnard.

Also, in spite of Santa Barbara's efforts with cultural events and other things, I would not describe it as "upscale city life." It's a small place, "village" even, depending on what you're used to.

Del Mar
Cardiff
Maybe Encinitas, but you'd have to go down the 78 to the Carlsbad Mall
