The EPA yesterday declared a number of new areas in California out of compliance with federal air quality standards due to particulates (soot and dust) in the air. The areas join Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley on the list.

This list refers to high levels of small PM2.5 (2.5 micrometer in size) particles of dust and soot in the air. The particles can cause respiratory and cardiac problems when they lodge in the lungs.

The full list of counties that need to clean their air of PM2.5 is:
  • Chico Area (Butte County)
  • Imperial Area (Imperial County)
  • Los Angeles Area (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino Counties)
  • Sacramento Area (El Dorado. Placer, Sacramento, Solano, and Yolo Counties)
  • San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma Counties)
  • San Joaquin Valley (Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tulare Counties)
  • Yuba City-Marysville Area (Sutter & Yuba Counties)

A US map showing all areas out of compliance is at:
