I really enjoyed Paso Robles when visiting. But a friend mentioned to me that there is a fault line that runs right through this area. I looked it up online and saw that it is the Rinconada Fault Line that runs through Paso and through the Lake Nacimento area. Does this mean that this fault line can become active at any time? I want to know this information because I was considering moving to Paso and now I'm concerned about this fault line. Any info?

Thanks,

If you're worried about fault lines at all you won't be wanting to move anywhere within 100 miles of the California coast or south of Tehachapi. Earthquake fault lines are all active in a geologic sense, it's more a matter of will one let loose in your lifetime and some are more active than others in the human sense.

We all sort of deal with it. It's probably safer than where you are living now. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada are free of fault zones, but we even feel some that are on the other side of the crest from time to time.

Move to San Juan Bautista. Although the San Andreas fault lies in your backyard, the soil structure is said to be "pillow-like", which will deaden the shock of an earthquake. Of course, if the earthquake is the BIG one, then you're just as screwed if you were living anywhere else where the big one might occur.

Many faults in CA are "active" but not typically in a disastrous fashion. There is always movement under the surface here. There was an earthquake that hit the Paso area a few years ago.

If you are worried about dying of a natural disaster, look at this map to see where you are safest. Southern California is actually a relatively safe place to be, despite the earthquakes, in comparison to other areas of the US.
