And $1.8 million in Fresno? That gets you 5,000 sq ft on the bluffs overlooking the San Joaquin River with a view like this.

My apologies, my inner-Bay-Area-snob was showing in my last post. Growing up in San Jose, Fresno was sort of like the "armpit" of CA - and Bakersfield was the "sweaty armpit". I'm sure Fresno is probably not all that bad and is considered a nice place to live for some people. I just have this biased view because of where I grew up... and here I am looking at Sacramento for our next place to live - another area that was also looked down upon by most in the SF Bay Area.

Not a problem, about 20 years ago Fresno deserved a lot of the bad rap.

But its very different now, heck the crime rate in Fresno is now lower than San Francisco or Sacramento.

And looking at the air quality forecast around the US today it looks like the worse air in the country is in Utah this week (Salt Lake City, Provo, etc) followed by Bakersfield and Seattle. Fresno is not too bad.
AIRNow - National Outlook for January 23-24

Still a long way to go to improve things in Fresno but its very different than it used to be.

Unfortunately old stereotypes die hard, even in liberal California.

Yeah, it's been at least 15 years since I've been out in the Fresno area. And that's the last image I have of the area, which wasn't very nice back then.

15 years ago? 1993 is when crime was at its worse in Fresno. Not a pretty sight back then.

In 1993 there were about 90 homicides (I think it was 87) and about 13,000 vehicle thefts in Fresno.

Last year (in spite of Fresno growing by 100,000 people since 1993) there were only 40 homicides and about 4,000 car thefts.

That compares with the City of Sacramento (475,000 people vs. Fresno's 485,000) which had 48 homicides and about 6,000 car thefts in 2008.

LOL, Well lets compare to San Francisco then, the difference in population does not offset higher crime in SF.
2008 homicides in SF (population 765,000) = 99
2008 homicides in Fresno (population 485,000) = 40

2008 car thefts in SF = about 6,000
2008 car thefts in Fresno = about 4,000

Your right, it is ugly there; I lived there for about 5 years about a mile from where those lovely photo's were taken (Fort Washington Golf Course). This was considered the "good area" The air was usually horrid, maybe 60 days a year max were as nice as those photo's that are posted. Summers= hot and smoggy, Winters= cold and FOGGY. You would get about 30 days in spring that were nice and another 30 in the Fall. It was also the car theft capital of the world as well, with auto insurance rates reflecting that. I moved from LA to Fresno and my insuance actually went up.
To the original post; Sonoma is not a bad area by any stretch of the imaination; a bit hot in the summer, but other than that it's very nice.

LOL As I said, old memories and stereotypes die hard. Yes things were bad but the turnaround has been huge.

The smog levels have gone way down along with the car thefts.

Here is the air quality improvement trend. Over 60 unhealthy days annually 5 years ago, now under 20 unhealthy air quality days per year.
AirCompare Report

Fresno is not even in the top 10 for per capita car theft anymore. Top 10 are
1. Modesto, CA
2. Las Vegas/Paradise, NV
3. San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos, CA
4. Stockton, CA
5. San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont, CA
6. Laredo, TX
7. Albuquerque, NM
8. Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, AZ
9. Yakima, WA
10. Tucson, AZ

California DOF says about 824,000 so we are both a little off. But we are close enough to still make the comparison.
