Anyone Else Getting Drilled by Car Registration Fees? (insurance, DMV)

So my dad owns a 95 Jeep Cherokee. Regardless of the mileage or condition of this type of vehicle, its worth at the very most 2,500 and that is being generous. Everyone favorite stupid car site KBB, which is so wrong most of the time but people constantly refer to it says the vehicle is worth about 1,600 in excellent condition.

So, this years registration is over 300 bucks. That's almost 20 percent of the KBB proposed value. I know fees are up but seriously, this is complete utter BS.

Something doesn't add up. Registration is based on the age and price of the car. I just paid $400 on a 3 year old 4Runner. My wife's old '99 Civic (totalled by the insurance company for $7500 in 2007) was maybe $100.

Something doesn't add up. I have a 06' $22k sticker in 06'. civic si that i paid $240 for .. and an 08' $9500 (in 08) that I paid $160 for. All of which go down every year ofc w/ depreciating value.

That's what I figured. I think he's gonna need to waste a few hours at the DMV to figure this out. IDK if AAA can handle this type of thing but its worth a try.

If he had any unpaid parking tickets they will be added to the registration.

Have your dad look at the registration renewal notice again. Everything that's being charged is itemized on the right side. $300 is waaaay too high for regular registration--above posters are correct. Is there parking tickets? Toll violations?

Also maybe the vehicle value was misstated to DMV. He can call the regular 800 number to discuss both the fees due and to ask what the value of his car is shown as. The VLF fee on his registration is 1.15% of the vehicle value.
