The Golden Hills Plaza shopping center in Paso Robles has been under construction for a while. The Colony Square Center in Atascadero has already gotten approval to start construction and is just waiting to be funded. And the Super Wal-Mart project in Atascadero is going to start it's EIR soon, and if there are no issues it would be proceed as the city council ruled.

Also, JcPenney's is replacing old stores in San Luis Obispo. Forever 21 plans to replace Gottschalks. So it is extremely hard to block those projects, and many would not try to block it. Also, the Target shopping center in SLO is close to getting approved. You don't think the enviro-cons are going to let the EIR go without bringing up every possible roadblock to stop the project do you? They'll seize on any and all findings in the EIR to stop the project.

It is my understanding that the Target is proposed for the "gap" property on the north side of los osos valley rd, next to the BMW dealer. This is inside the city limits, and the enviro-cons that have held up Dalidio for so long will go after the target developmet also. Costco and Home Depot were approved because that side of the street is county, not city. Very different process.

Which is exactly why I'm glad I got out of that town. I loved Atascadero, but the minute they put WalMart up, it's going to turn into another one of those scuzzy places. It's unfortunate, too... Atascadero's downtown was beginning to take shape.

The news is just breaking on the winning bids for locations.

Macys won the Visalia store and Fresno RiverPark. They outbid Forever 21 for Visalia.

Forever 21 got most of the other stores they bid on.

I understand there were other chains interested in some locations, but no word yet on any stores that others may have won.

This is incorrect. The gap property is on the north side (opposite of costco) and is between the bmw dealer and the alternative high school.

LOVR is still the divider between city and county. The lines have not changed. Costco and HD are in the county; the gap property is in the city.

Just wait until the target project gets going. The enviro-cons (secretly backed financially by the downtown assoc and the Copeland family) are going to come out of the woodwork and try to stop it.

The gap location is where you said it is, but im positive it's in the county. The project goes before the city council in mid-August.

Super Wal-Mart is undergoing it's EIR, and will finish late next year, and construction should start in early 2011.

Also, there is no downtown Atascadero anymore. The Carlton is going to be closing soon, and with no money to finance the Colony Square project its a dead downtown pretty much. They are putting in a Panda Express where the old Carls Jr was, and a new Jack N Box next to the new Holiday Inn Express.

And, within this year we will have a Tractor Supply Co. store in Atascadero. Lowe's in Paso Robles. Forever 21, JcPenney's, and Kohl's in San Luis Obispo

After that, it's the Target in San Luis Obispo, Super Wal-Mart in Atascadero, and Colony Square Center in Atascadero if they all pass.

The EIR was completed in 2007 but a group sued that it did not adequately address some issues like water use and increased urban decay if other stores closed. The court ruled in their favor and the EIR had to be revised.

If the EIR goes as plans, the EIR would finish late 2010 and construction would stat in late 2010 and the project would be built in late 2012. If the EIR got slowed, then there woulde be a delay in the development.

The anti-WalMart group tried getting a initiative passed to prevent Wal-Mart, but it did not work. And then the results for that initiative was the majority didnt want it. The city of Atascadero needs the tax revenue, so there is almost 100% support for the project.

I also believe a good EIR will be done since the city has hired an extremely good firm from Orange County. WalMart is paying the firm almost a half-million dollars.

The EIR for the walmart in atascadero as well as the one for the target center in slo will get tied up in court by the enviro-nazis, no-growthers, downtown retail assoc or all three in an effort to get the project back in front of the planning commission or city council to try to get them to deny the project. If that tactic fails they will use their lawyers to file lawsuits every step of the way to make the project too expensive to pursue. This is fact.
