I don't remember Russell's, but I do remember a hamburger chain called "Wimpy's," after the Popeye character.

The (semi-original) on Atlantic was the one I frequented the most.

The long time cook, George, then opened a place called Brad's with a partner and then opened Babe's Kitchen (the name of his dog at the time) on Wardlow Rd. near Bixby Knolls. The taste of the hash browns and burgers is still going.
I appreciate the tip, I'll have to try it! Thanks!

Where Russell's went wrong is when it got sold to a guy in the wholesale food biz. He expanded the operation into a few stores and couldn't keep up with the debt. Another investor took over and ran it into the ground.
When they opened one up in Huntington, along with others, I was worried something like that might happen.

NO... I wish it was....Tony's had the best subs I've ever had! I wanted to take my children there during a 1998 visit... There was a second location in Mission Hills during the 70's. Wow... I've told so many people about their subs.

there were 3 places in SGV that had subs to die for, I know they have changed hands since we left and may all be out of business for all I know: One was the Grinder on the corner of Hill and I don't know the other street, maybe Washington on the Altadena/Pasa border. The other 2 were in Arcadia, one was Anthony's Italian restaurant and the other O.J.s All three places used real mean, not like we get today with a bunch of fillers and they used more than 1 oz plus real pieces of lettuce, onion, etc. then added dressing. We did try O.J. about 6 or 8years ago, it had changed hands (which we knew) too bad the new owners didn't keep the same quality.

I can still hear them in my memory, that beautiful drumming sound like multi engine Harleys in the sky - 6es, 7s, even the odd old stalwart 3, not to mention the Connies, Convairs and withering remnant of Stratoliners.
Well, it sounds as though you remember a little more of that than I do. I am still in my early 40s, but do remember the PSA Electras that used to fly into Burbank when I was young. It wasn't long until the DC-9s and 727s replaced them. I don't really remember any of the others being used on a regular basis, but that may be because I wasn't close to a larger airport where I would have seen them.

PSA, $19 to SFO and I think $25 round trip, but if you flew Western you got free champagne.

The Hamburger Hamlet on Lake Avenue in Pasadena is still there. Not like the Westwood one, but it's still good. Our family used to go there when I was a kid in the 1960's...but back then, eating out was only for special occasions, not the way it is today.

That is the one I remember, we lived in Altadena in the early 70s and yes, the kids thought eating out was a real treat. Their favorite place was Perry's cafeteria in Pasadena or maybe it was considered a buffet, whatever. They charged the kids by the lb of their weight....Cheap meal for the family.
