During cold periods like this, just how bad is the 8 through those mountains? I heard today they'd shut down the freeway due to ignorant people thinking they can still drive like speed demons on slick roads...a coworker who came back from La Posta said her car actually lost control briefly...so I'm just trying to get a sense of what I'm up against. Tomorrow morning at 6am I have to drive out to Quechan for a client support call...and I've not driven that far east. My colleague who has made the drive plenty of times was concerned. He also has to go out there for a separate matter. He wanted to drive with me as he was worried about his tires. Mine are definitely newer, but again, just want to make sure I understand what I'm up against.

I drove that route a few weeks ago from San Diego to Phoenix at the tail end of the Santa Anas/heat wave (Martin Luther King Jr. weekend). I thought it was bad enough going through the mountains in normal conditions (then again, I have a tiny hatchback with a golf cart engine), I can't imagine trekking through that in adverse weather.

Ok, it wasn't too bad. The worst part was the high winds in the mountains going up to Yuma. 26 degrees F.

Coming back however, the weather was quite nice, and the drive was ruined by the 3-4 border patrol stops.
