I have heard that earthquakes occur often in Long Beach. Is it true? Does anyone live there that could tell me about this?

earthquakes big enough to feel are disbursed all around california. any big quake in the LA basin will be felt in Long Beach and there are a few coastal faults that run to it or through it(Newport fault goes from Newport to Long Beach eh?). just the nature of things here

Long Beach was the epicenter of a tragic earthquake in the 1930's [destroyed school buildings that triggered stricter building codes & retrofitting of all schools in California.

Long Beach is as susceptible as the rest of Los Angeles [on active fault lines The recent earthquake may have trigger earth movement under my house

The USGS has info on the frequency, location and magnitude of earthquakes.

An earthquake doesn't need to occur below Long Beach in order for you to feel it. The Northridge earthquake caused the scoreboard at Anaheim Stadium to completely collapse into the left field bleachers. Northridge is 50 miles from Anaheim.

The Newport-Inglewood fault is an active fault that runs directly underneath a heavily populated area, roughly the route the 405 Freeway takes from OC to LAX. I would be much more concerned about a major earthquake on that fault rather than the San Andreas fault, no doubt about it! As I've said time and time again, the best thing to do is BE PREPARED.

Hell we felt Northridge very well here in San Diego, about 120 miles away.

There's a great piece of film you could probably find at your local library or on the net that was taken DURING the Long Beach earthquake in the 30's when they still shot movies down there. It shows everything starting to shake and WC Fields exhorting everyone to "Stay calm" as they exit.

That fault is dangerous precisely because of where it runs. In San Diego we call the same fault zone the Rose Canyon Fault.
