What event or overall condition happening in California would make you say, "Enough. I'm leaving."? This isn't a question for people who've already decided to leave. We all know the laundry list of reasons posted here. I'm interested in hearing from people who have no plans to leave. What would it take to make you move?

Wow! That's such a hard question.

A 10.0 earthquake followed by daily 7+ aftershocks? (But I'd probably want to come back after awhile.)

A few million dollars and an offer to live somewhere in Europe?

I'll post my PayPal if anybody wants to take up a collection!

What it took me to want to leave is the dead economy killing my career. By the time the economy recovers I'll be past the date I wanted to retire. I decided to do it now, and move to a place with a lower cost of living.

So my answer to the OP: high cost of living and career ending.

What is your career in? The reason I ask is because it appears most careers are being offshored. I recently heard that IBM was offering people with jobs here in the USA a chance to "apply" for simlar jobs in other countries at the prevailing wages in the other countries. In other words, you could apply for your job in Brazil and be paid in Brazilian wages and IBM would help you arrange the visas, etc., but would not pay for your move or pay you the same salary you were making here. The alternative is to be laid off by IBM here in the USA.

Default What would make me leave CA?

1. A new real estate bubble further driving up the cost of living (I don't expect another one for 20 years)

2. All of my family and friends leaving both Northern and Southern California.

3. A great job offering relocation expenses elsewhere (but not in the South or Midwest)

4. Total death of California's cultural infrastructure
