Can anyone tell me about Palmdale and lancaster? (Glendale, Pomona: real estate, crime rate)

Searching around and found that some homes in these areas are actually as cheap as the midwest, but I am weary. Can anyone tell me what areas of these towns to avoid? Also if the economies in these towns are decent? Here's a link to a home I was looking at, seemed waaaay to good to be true. You should be weary. I am not an L.A local however, I visited the area in the summer of 2007, before I discovered city-data. I didn't like what I saw when I was there. It did not seem like L.A to me at all. Just a vast desert area that was quite a drive to L.A. I researched it once I discovered city-data and found out that the area has a pretty high crime rate. Many gangs have moved into the area and there is not a lot of local employment. Most people commute great distances for work. I decided that it was not at all a place I would want to bring my family to. If you are interested in moving to L.A then I would not consider that area, it is cheap for a reason. Hopefully some locals can provide you with more information. There are a few good threads on here about palmdale/lancaster just use the search tool.

From spending a considerable amount of time in St.Louis and Palmdale/Lancaster...

I would avoid the latter, it gets very hot in the summer (although dry heat) and is mostly working/lower class. Filled with wannabe gangs that had to move from L.A. because it got too expensive.

The upscale areas are small and just like a regular suburban environment

As a general rule, you want to avoid everything on the east side of either town. The farther west you go, the better off you'll be. The public schools aren't the greatest, but there are a couple of good private schools.

I wouldn't believe everything you read on here about the area. If you're close enough, come out and take a look. Like I said, east side is pretty sketchy, but the west side is nice enough- especially for the price.

PS- If the real estate listing doesn't say something about being on the West side, that probably means it's on the east side. "Westside" is a major selling point.

I just glanced at the schools in the vicinity; all API ranked 2/10 or 3/10, not a good sign.

We bought a new home there in '88, just one mile away, and the public schools were poor even then. That tiny, old house could need some costly repairs, turning a great deal into a nightmare. OP, it would be worth paying more to locate your family in a better area. Congrats on doing your homework first.

I wish people like you wouldnt judge palmdale because of the **** lies people have to say about it over the internet, thats pretty ignorant of you. High crime rate? wow lmao, in all my years living in pamldale (which was all my life) (born and raised) palmdale has never had a "High crime rate". The most negative thing about the place is the fact that its in the middle of the desert.Wow I still cant believe you said "PALMDALE" has a High crime rate, Palmdale is the most boring city besides (California city) in all of California that i Know of. The only plus sides is the fact that LA is only a hour away and Las vegas is only 3 hours away. There are very nice areas and there can be some bad areas. Every city has its ups and downs, No matter if you lived in Glendale, Pomona ,torrance or Palmdale.The crime rate is just as much as any other LA county city.

There are a lot of hi tech companies in those areas plus a majoy military base nearby as well. I travel to Palmdale and Lancaster frequently and have no issues there with exception of the heat.
