Hi there, a lot of the roads especially in the suburbs of Cal City is unpaved, but laid out. It's quite risky to drive on these sandy dirt roads on a sedan, many of them are washboards which is very uncomfortable to ride through. Will these unpaved roads every get paved?

Probably never, I'd imagine there's a very small tax base there. Do you know how much it costs to pave a road? Why would a small, poor city pave roads where only a few people live?

When the cows come home.
But they won't be moving any equipment then...because of the cows on the roads.

High desert ENE of Mojave and north of Edwards AFB. It's in Kern County. Pretty remote. Designed as a planned community that never really took off. Home to about 15,000 souls.

Thanks. I wonder why having great roads there might be a priority?

When I lived in WA, for example, there are a ton of old logging roads that can get you way into the national forests, but you better have a great 4 wheel drive vehicle.

If this is the same scenario, why mess that up? It keeps a lot of people from wrecking it. I think making access difficult for the masses is good policy in some areas.

I dated a girl from California City 50 years ago. You mean they still don't have paved roads?!? Incredible.

The original plan was a slightly up-market bedroom community for Edwards AFB, where the aerospace growth was hot in the late 1950's. When LBJ moved most of NASA's mission and space tech to Houston, the departure of a lot of engineers and other white-collar workers knocked the wind out of Cal City's reason to be there.

A guy I was working with sold land out that way when Edwards was suppose to take off. I bought 5 acres, now there is so much land there you can't give it away.

I figured this was an old thread that someone resuscitated because no one here is worried about the roads right now. Why should they? Everyone's home. In fact, Cal Trans has been busy doing a lot of repair work as I write this. Perfect time with no one on the road, wouldn't you think?

I am hoping they would reopen road repairs soon. As it makes total sense to do it now with little traffic. I wish the worn out park parking lots are going to be repaved soon since they are practically half closed anyways.
