as Fontucky said, it's more in the touristy areas like Seattle. In my area its about 10 cents more than where Fontucky is.

At one time the re-formulated fuel was needed. With modern electronic control of the engine it is far less a concern. However in CA gas mileage suffers from using the CA spec fuel so ............... punishment for using fossil fuel AND revenue to the State.

So why do you continue to suffer the fine folks of SoCal with your hate? Wouldn't finding a state more to your liking benefit everybody? Would lower your gas bill too, no?

He has been convinced by those that love CA no matter what, that he should stay and enjoy the beauty. So CA is stuck with such ones.

BTW the main ones to lobby for the special forumlation was... The oil companies who have refineries in the state. That's a fact. Sure, righties love to blame environmentalists and the environmentalists did go along with the idea because the new forumation was supposed to reduce smog but the oil companies were the ones who really spent big money lobbying for it. Why? Simple, it keeps virtually all gas refined out of state out of the California market. It gives the 20 refineries in the state a captive market without outside competition and of those 20 refineries just four companies dominate 80% of the capacity.

So the short answer of why gas prices are higher in this state is lack of competition and it was the oil companies based in this state who wanted it that way.

Fuel taxes in the United States - Ask.com Encyclopedia

The price difference due to state gas taxes is only ~$0.20. The forumlation is what really pushes the price up because it makes California into a gas island with mostly only the gas refined in the state being sold in the state.

If we care about making car drivers pay for the cost of the roads they use, which is something I think should happen, then we'd have to increase the total gas tax, diesel tax, and registration fees by five times their current rate as currently user fees (gas tax plus registration fees) pay ~20% of the cost to maintain existing roadways and it does not pay a single penny towards paying down the cost of initial construction costs of those roadways. I think it is only just that we car drivers at least pay to maintain the roads we use instead of demanding endless subsidies.

It is not California that I detest but the incompetent imbeciles running the state that have ruined it. California could be the poster child for all the planet to view of all the ills and failures of liberalism, socialism, and so called progressivism, which is anything but. There have been thousands of posts going back many years on CD lamenting the failures of those in control of our once grand state.

California's Oil Refineries
Even if true, it was the legislature and Governor who made it possible then and now. THEY did it.
