When cutting your grass, cut only 1/3inch of it off at a time.

Any more will weaken the roots and require more water!

So SIMPLE!

My solution is better yet: don't grow grass.

If one must grow it, though, water it sparsely. 3 minutes every other day, in the wee hours of the morning. It's enough to keep it green so the city/HOA can't complain.

The sprinkler system also has a rain sensor, so it won't turn on if there's any water in the collector.

Most lawns do better with a good, deep, soaking once a week or so rather than just getting the top wet all the time.
