Marin, SLO, or SB for the best.

No doubt that Marin is snooty, that's my guess. I've only been there twice. The cost of RE certainly should make that county exclusive.

You have to at least admit it's gorgeous. Marin Co. is absolutely gorgeous. If I worked in SF, I'd want to live in Marin. If somebody were to be instantly placed in Marin Co. and they didn't know where they were. That person probably couldn't fathom that a city like SF could be so close.

It's no different than peoples' choices of cities and states. What one person loves, another hates. Personally, I don't like the desert, nor do I care for flat agricultural land. For me, that leaves out many counties or parts of them. I love mountains, hills, the ocean, lakes and running water. I've lived in southern, central and northern California and if I was forced to pick a least liked county from my perspective it would be Kern. But that's still a personal preference, or lack thereof, based upon three years in Bakersfield due to my occupation. There are those who love the town and are extremely loyal to it. I couldn't stand it and have never been back nor even driven through.

Buit what do I know? Now I live in the Ozarks that many think is nothing but rednecks and hillbillies with no redeeming qualities and even fewer teeth. And what's worse, I'm here by choice.

Worse=San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial Valley
Best=Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco

Runners up for worse=Kings
Runners up for best=Santa Barbara

Others for best=San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Napa, Fresno, Kern
Others for Worse=Tulare, Humboldt, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, San Benito

I rated them by job availability and I just dont like LA or SF so they not on my list.

I like all of the coastal counties, San Diego, OC, LA, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Marin, Sonoma, and Mendocino. If I had to pick one, my choice would be MONTEREY for it's natural beauty.

My opinion is based on personal experiences of where I have lived and/or visited numerous times.

Best - Ventura, Santa Barbara and SLO counties
Worst - Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange counties

I can't pick a "best" - there are too many places that I love here. I can pick what I personally feel is the worst - Imperial. Its valuable because of the agriculture but what a hot, sad, ugly poor place in a terrible spot. I don't know if there is a worse spot than El Centro or Calexico.

I'm going to weigh in for Imperial Co as the worst as well. It consistently has the highest unemployment, and the heat is unbearable much of the time. Also a lot of international pollution, and near recent earthquake epicenters.

I know this thread is somewhat dated, but no one seemed to mention that there are a total of FIFTY-EIGHT counties in this state, some of which NO ONE has mentioned.

I notice the OP has never made it back here, so it was probably some sort of troll question.

The questions, of course, are "best for what?" and "worst for what?"

Best for finding lots of company = Los Angeles

Worst for same = Alpine (in fact, the county is so small in population that a number of years ago a homosexual faction tried to take over the local governance so they could have their own 'spot'); as of 2007 1,145 people (according to the World Almanac) and not growing.

Best for long-range missile practice: San Bernardino; at over 20,000 square miles the largest county in the US in area, bigger than New England.

Worst for same: San Francisco. Smallest in area but only bad for them in that they would have to pay damages to the entity in charge of where their missiles would land. But it is unlikely that SF would do that or that they would even know what a missile is.

Best for sunning your buns in January: Imperial County. Much of the county is below sea level, and while it can still be cool at night, the days are usually pretty sunny.

Worst for same: Inyo or Alpine. Wouldn't even do it in April. Modoc isn't good, either; even in August the temps there can drop into the high forties at night.

Best for 80 mph+ drving: Kern, at least past Lebec where the 5 and the 99 run, except for the Tule Fog.

Worst for same: tie between San Luis Obispo and Trinity, especially if you're not driving and yet are still in the car. Can you say "highway 101 north of SLO" and "Highway 299"?

Etc, etc, etc.
