I believe you meant "steppe," NOT "half-desert." By the way, I actually AM a fan of the desert/steppe landscape and climate! Yes, I'm insane in the membrane.

As for the best and worst CA counties IMO (yes, only the ones I spent time in):

Best: San Diego, Orange
Worst: Kern

Best/worst (average): Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles

Can't disagree with that and I have lived in SD, LA and Riverside counties and OC. Now OC used to be the best in my opinion, but it has gone downhill with COL, Crowding and traffic.

I've only have lived in Riverside County for almost ALL of my life thus far. The other five counties I've mentioned were the ones I've travelled to/visited, ESPECIALLY Kern County (once stopped in Bakersfield on the return to Indio from Las Vegas).
