When the "Big One" strikes (giant earthquake on the San Andreas Fault) the United States will split along the fault line and form the new island of California. The eastern part of the U.S. will slip beneath the ocean and will never be heard from ever again, except for a few methane bubbles arising from the ocean floor in the vicinity of where Washington D.C. used to be.

So yes, California will be its own country one day, and hopefully we Californians will make better governmental choices then.

California already was its own country after declaring independence from Mexico on 6/14/1846 and prior to annexation by the United States on 7/19/1846. I believe it was called the California Republic.
