Except for 14 years in Reno I've lived in the SF Bay Area my entire life. I have had several people from ask me what part of Texas I'm from and that surprises me because I don't recognize anything in my voice or speech patterns that would make someone think that. The only time I am ever accused of being from California is when I'm visiting my husband's relatives in Missouri. I get the 'you must be from California' constantly in stores and restaurants, but the same people who say that tell my husband that he is must be from Ohio and he actually did grow up there, so maybe folks in Missouri are experts on figuring out where people are from.
