Default Live central yet close to the outdoors

Crescent City: cool climate, rugged northern coast, proximity to wild spaces. Weaverville: mountains, forest, natural beauty. Redding: Convenient and accessible, yet still close to lakes, trees, mountains. All three are county seats and centers of activity for their area. Personally prefer to be as centrally located as possible without being removed from nature.

Sacramento or Davis

It's a small-big city feel - I like the kitchy areas and old world charm - plus I like the heat and Sacramento has got it all

Redding is a fair size city, 80,000, with great tourist attractions, sunny in summer, snow in winter (not very often though), great shopping areas, and jobs are plentiful.
Red Bluff, pop. 14,500, has lots of local events, agriculture, Redding's only 30 minutes north of Red Bluff, affordable houses, lots of construction is going on right now.

When you say "Northern", do you include the Bay Area? I live in San Francisco, and still think it's among the greatest cities in the world - even after being here over 20 years. If I went more rural, I'd probably choose to live in Arcata, Mendocino, or the Napa area... all gorgeous and welcoming places!

Oh my, San Fransico! Some people just know where to live! I'd love to live there and it is one of the best cities I've ever been in. Unfortuntely I'd never be able to afford it. If I could, I would not be in Washington. Although this place is catching up with California, 'cost of living-wise' fast!

My absolute favorite place in northern CA is Mendocino and Fort Bragg. Why? redwoods growing up to the beach! Absolute serenity!

My wife and I lived in Yosemite for years. In So CA for now but we are moving back up in a few months.

I love living in McKinleyville California, it is 12 miles north of Eureka, 69 miles south of Crescent city and 350 miles north of San Fransisco . It is unincorporated, 16,000 people, 2 large grocery stores, 2 hardware stores, a nine plex theater and a big k, plus many resturants and eateries. The town is on the coast and a river. The average price of a new 3 bed, 2 bath home is $290,000 . It rains between 36 and 48 inch's a year and is green year round quick access to the Six Rivers National forest, Redwood national park and many more. Eureka is the largest town in the county at 28,000 and the county is 130,000. The crime in McKinleyville is much lower than the state average and lower than Eureka's. The sky's are clear . There is easy access to snowy mountains in the winter and long beach's in the summer. There is a lack of jobs here though, there is a state university in the town of Arcata. The price of gas is high too. Other than those , it is a beautiful place to live, when I moved up here in 1992 it was like moving back in time 30 years.

Monte Rio - Nice indeed. Art. Lifestyle. Redwoods.

Bodega Bay - Fishing, scenery, the birds.

The Sea Ranch - Wow.

Downieville - Don't tell anyone about this gem.

Wilbur Springs - nothing much there but clothing is optional.

Jamestown - Excellent food in this nice little Mother Lode town.

Tiburon - Don't ask the price.
