So - I just got engaged to my long time boyfriend, and he is stationed at Lemoore NAS. Our daughter and I are leaving out May 2nd to move in with him. He has an apt off base...I'm just kind of wondering if anyone can help me out with knowing what to expect when I get out there. I've never been west of Texas, so I'm kind of clueless, and terrified to be honest

Nothing to get nervous about. In-fact, the San Joaquin valley [where Lemoore is located] is in many ways similar to Texas. It is a major agricultural area with lots of orchards\ crops. Quite hot during summer & not a whole lot to do except drive into Fresno or Bakersfield. It is a safe & family-oriented region.

We lived on Lemoore NAS for two years (05-07). We moved from FL. I hated Lemoore. I was very bored there. Hopefully you'll have a better experience.

Here are some sites that I visited while my husband was in the Navy and the 16 mths after he left the Navy:

southvalleymommies.com (local only)
militarysos.com (you'll meet people in Lemoore and all over the world! You'll have friends even before he gets transferred)
thewomanhood.com (sister site to SOS)

The women on the sites have girls' night out, playdates, etc.

Good luck getting comfy in Lemoore!

I just spoke with someone last month who moved from southeast Texas to Lemoore years ago and then chose to stay there. They are very comfortable with the area. You should be fine.

i disagree with Happ, we lived in Texas for 13 years and visited SoEast Texas, you will find them very different, but I think you will like the valley. the weather, though quite hot in the summer, is not humid like Texas. The one thing that will be similar, neither area is heavily populated and you can see for miles..You will probably find the demographis similar and the culture somwhat the same..

Tmarieb78, you mentioned moving from Fl and hating Lamoore, Fl and SoEast Texas are about as different and Los Angeles and Kalamozoo Mi. I think the OP will just fine.

Nita

By now, Michelle, you have moved and are probably used to the San Joaquin Valley. I was stationed at NAS Lemoore from 1963 to 1966 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Met my wife in Hanford, CA and have been married for over 52 years. The weather is hot in summer, but no humidity (similar to W Texas). Lot of fog in winter months but not cold, cold. It's remote but not THAT remote. Pismo Beach on the Pacific, Sequoya, Kings Canyon and Yosemite Nat'l Parks are all easy drives away. Unlike other parts of ultra liberal CA, this area is friendly and nice.

Ghost123 must be weenie. I was there, at NAS Lemoore, from 1963 till 1966 and found it to be a nice place to live and serve my country. (Way better than VietNam where a lot of the A-4 squadrons at Lemoore were going). Centrally located in CA., Pismo Beach on the Pacific, Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite Natl Parks are all easy drives from the base as are LA and Frisco (a bit farther away). The weather is hot (but dry) in summer, and cool (and foggy) during 3 mo of winter. It is similar to NAS Kingsville, TX and NAS Corpus Christi, TX, but just less water nearby.

Happ forgot to mention there is A LOT more to do than go to the city of Fresno or Bakersfield. Three Natl Parks are an easy drive from NAS Lemoore. Sequoia (just east of Hanford and Visalia) with Kings Canyon and Yosemite a little farther north. Then there is the Pacific coast. We used to go to Pismo Beach often, with other seaside towns and beaches near Pismo. Swimming is also avail in the Kings River near the NAS and also reservoirs east of Visalia and north of Fresno.
