I'm talking about Californians aged 18-35. Would you rather an apartment/condo or a separate house? What about a townhouse?

I've always lived in a house, never an apartment.

Done both. Never been as comfortable in apartments as I am in my rental house now.. it's like I don't even have neighbors.

Condo/Townhouse for me.

I don't like traditional stand alone houses very much; yards, drive ways, etc...I would prefer a high-rise, but it is easier with kids to live in a townhouse. I was raised in cities, so the "bee hive" doesn't bother me and I enjoy hearing my neighbors once in a while.

house house house. I will GLADLY pay extra rent to have a yard, to NOT have stairs and to have a guaranteed place to park my car. I lived in a condo once for about a year and it was miserable.

Now, when I move back to Germany in a few years I will try my darndest to find a house, but it probably won't happen so it'll be back to an apartment

I love owning a house, a back yard is very important to me and owning my own house is just something I have to have.

Actually, considering the current housing fiasco, I think houses are for suckers .

when was the last time an apt made you money? or allowed you to have a dire emergency credit line with massive potential? my aging grandparents had to tap their equity for some major health problems, something they could never have done in an apt.

hell, my grandparents pay less in mortgage on a 3bd 2bath house than i pay in rent on a 40y/o 2b apt with no a/c, single pane windows, and no insulation in the walls

I am not going to argue with you, I have owned 2 houses and made a lot of money off them. I prefer to buy/rent a townhouse and have all the amenities of city life, it has nothing to do with being a sucker.

But Apartments can SAVE you a lot of money, when you are paying 2500 a month for a place that would cost you 4000 a month...that's saving/making money. Also flexibility to move around and seek better paying jobs is making money.
