I agree with JetJockey. And I think JetJockey was being serious.

But I do object to the "open" attitude in California at times. There is such a thing as being "too open"...as in...thinking that because something is a new or trendy idea that it is automatically good, without really evaulating it.
Nope! There are a couple of local businesses (mostly restaurants, coffee shops, beauty parlors, retail etc.) that I frequent because I know the managers/owners let their employees show their tattoos and piercings and don't force them to cover up.

I agree with the last part...but how can you tell that they only go along with it because it's 'new and trendy'? Let's use my sleeve of a tattoo as an example. I started work on my arm when I was 18, I had wanted a tattoo and planned to start since I was 13 or so. It's still a work in progress 7 years later because I take my time to work with my artist and draw things that are interesting, artistically challenging (for his sake more than mine ) and meaningful in my life.

Then, tattoos started becoming REALLLLLY popular and I was put into the same group as the 'OMG, I totally got drunk and got a butterfly tattooed on me at 3 am!!LOLOL' crowd. Of course, my artist would NEVER tattoo someone who is intoxicated and has at least a month long waiting list so there aren't many regrets for the most part.. especially when he charges $300 an hour.

Anyway, tattoos will become unpopular and there will be a backlash but I will still like mine and still continue on my journey with them, regardless of what you or anyone else thinks. I did it because I wanted to, not to be part of a trend.

Man just don't worry about it. People will be what they will you know? Those that do worry about appearances, sit in traffic, ect.. aren't part of the surfer lifestyle at that time for sure. but they might be thinkin about waves the whole time haha. You can't expect everyone to act right you know man.

Ya shoulda been there, at the beach, in the 50s and 60s. Talk about laid back, husbands worked, wives spent their days tending the children, playing tennis and joining their friends for a few hands of bridge on the beach while we children romped around in safety and adventure, sailed our own boats and played in the water. Thereafter, social upheaval, rising prices and the beginnings of corporate excesses took their toll and still do. Pity!

The reality is that it all depends on where you live in California. I live in a city where the cost of living is below the national average, the average income and education level is relatively high, unemployment is practically zero, the commute time is about 5 minutes in heavy traffic, and the cost of a 3 bd/2bth home runs about $105,000

It all depends on where you live... "California" is not just Huntington Beach. its a huge and diverse state. But yeah, compared to most other states on the "east coast", people here are fairly laid back.

What city do you live in?

I do not and will never wear tatoos or piercings of any kinds. And if I see someone with them, I will treat them like crap. I just cant stand it... it serves no purpose other than to annoy me. Man I hate tatoos....
Your a ****ing ******* and your exactly the type of person that people who go to California want to get away from. We want to live in a place where people are excepting of each other and nice to each other. Not where people are judged by others based upon how they look or treated like crap by *******s like you.

Yes, Dad worked 8-5 and Mom stayed home, cooked and cared for us and visited her friends as well. I played in safety, walked to the theater, in school the biggest problem was talking in class and the Principle's paddle cured that. We drove to the beach and found parking that was free and had a ball. Knott's was free and Disneyland was reasonable.

Drugs? At the Drug Store
Pornography? Really hard to find and less exposure than you see on regular TV now
Guns? Yep cap pistols in every kids room
Violence? Lucy giving Ricky heck
Language? English and no vulgarity except among 6 year olds trying to sound older.
Gangs? Never knew or saw any, except on TV as in West Side Story.

Aah those were the days, now we have .....

Pity the poor easterner who comes to my new home. Here 'soon' takes on a whole new meaning. It could be tomorrow, or next week. Or longer. Soon is when the time comes. As a native Californian this drove me nuts at first. No, I did not love the rush and hurry and get there NOW culture in socal, but this was a little to, ugh, extreme. But I just assume that what I think should take a week or two will take a month now, and chill out.

Actually I think it would help Socal in particular to have a little of the attitude since everyone seems to be wearing themselves to a frazzle trying to hurry to the next stop and then to uptight to enjoy it.

Could somebody send us an In-n-out burger. I miss their burgers with the carmelized onion and sauce. yum.

Bayareahillbilly, No I don't think you should be criticized for being a traditionalist... I just think you would REALLY fit in here in my Indiana town! Don't take that the wrong way but just by reading your posts I can see you would mingle good with these midwest folk
I remember the California that used to be when I was a kid in the San Fernando valley when the houses were new. That's one of the things I love about my house. Its just a bit smaller than the one I grew up in with a big yard and lots of trees. And neighbors I even know. I had to leave the state to find the place I remembered.

We're in our third week of 100 plus temps. Even the summer weather (But now I have AC so there)
