I am also heading SLO way- as an early semi-retiree. House hunting is a challenge. Any help with understanding the regions within SLO town. I wish to buy a small and if possible cute house.
Are the student rentals dispersed thro the whole town?
Any info on a register of activity groups as a way of meeting people?

Check out http://www.slochamber.org/cm/Home.html and sanluisobispo.com which is the areas daily newspaper. The Chamber will give you events, average housing prices, etc. . . . . student rentals are concentrated around Poly, although there are students renting EVERYWHERE. There are some students whose parents have the financial means to purchase a house for their offspring while attending school, I've found nice little family residential areas with a student population smack dab in the middle of it. There are also several communities nearby where housing prices are lower (and yes, have renting students). http://www.ci.san-luis-obispo.ca.us/...movinghere.asp will also give you info on community services .. .

I'm heading back in summer of '08, from the wet PNW. Spent my childhood there, moved there as an adult to work, graduated from Poly . . . at 50yo, it's the only place I can think of where I was truly happy. I know it's changed from the visions in my memories .. . but I'll make it a good journey, surely. Not sure when I'll have enough $ for a small condo (only have $125k in equity), though! Perhaps one day prices will allow me to do so. Good luck ~

If you like outdoor activities this is the place for you! You will be 15-20 minutes from everything. The Ocean, perfect Mt. Biking and rock climbing. There is also the Oceano Dunes and Pozo. Just a couple of places perfect for offroad vehicles and so much more

There is the nearby Pismo Beach area just 10 miles southwest and the Morro Bay area is about 15 miles northwest. Morro Bay State Park and Montana De Oro State Park can be visited easily the same day as they are maybe just five miles apart. Both are beautiful and there is camping at Morro Bay SP; not sure about Montana De Oro SP.
