Been through Eureka, didn't stop. Seemed nice. But I hear about high crime, not being safe, ghetto area's. To me, it's hard to imagine those places existing in that area of CA. It's so beautiful and pristine. So what's up? Is Eureka a bummer?

There's nothing to do up there and the weather sucks. People in places where there is little to do tend to find things to do, like drugs. Small towns can be just as crappy as inner cities in many ways. A lot of those small towns along the 101 corridor in far Northern Ca have some problems one wouldn't expect, lots of drugs like meth and drinking too. Small town ghetto people and their ghetto values/morals is part of the problems with towns up there.

sav858, hit the nail on the head with the drugs. I wouldn't say that it has ghettos but the area has a huge crime problem mainly with the youth and drugs.

The timber and lumber processing jobs have declined steeply. It's a no brainer.

OK, that's supposed to explain why an isolated city of 25k becomes drug invsted and dangerous. C'mon?

Actually that is why a lot of places become drug infested and dangerous, lack of good jobs. It's not always the case of course but its a common characteristic among communities that have declined like that.

And Eureka is proof that native born white Americans can be ghetto as well, given that Eureka has very few immigrants, almost no nonwhites, and an extremely tiny Latino population. Eureka makes Newport Beach look as diverse as Alameda County by comparison.

OK, I hear you. But there is a lack of good jobs in the SLO area as well. The tweakers aren't taking over. Is it completely comparable? No. Because I wouldn't say SLO Co. is declining. But trust me. The SLO job market, especially compared to the real estate costs, has to be as bad as anywhere. You're lucky to have a good job here. And even luckier to have one that would allow you to by a home.
I was just wondering, not trying to argue.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune suggests otherwise regarding SLO's meth problem:

I know it's here. I just don't see the rampant ills associated with it.
