Hello all:
I have applied for a faculty position at SSU. In just a general effort to understand the area (I am currently on the east coast by DC) I have a few questions I hoped someone may respond to:

I have a young son about to start school and have him accepted to a private progresive school here at home. What is the schooling situation in Sebastopol and Santa Rosa? Does anyone have any opinions on the private school offering? Anyone familiar with Brush Creek Montessori School in Santa Rosa?

What are the good places to live? Can one buy a smaller or older house (1400 - 925 sq feet) to live in a better place?

Is anyone familiar with the teachers and full faculty housing allowances? Is this a perk people negotiate?

Any input is welcome - if I get an interview I want to utilize my time to check out the aera, schools, things, and issues that may be raised on the thread.

Many thanks,
S.B.S.

Hi SBS. I'm starting with Cal State this fall. The start up package was considerable, but you might find that the cost of living [particularly in regards to housing] can sometimes be daunting. I did not receive a housing allowance, but will be reimbursed several k for my moving expenses.

I'm not sure which type of school you are looking for or in what area. Brush Creek Montessori is in east Santa Rosa. I am not personally familiar with it, so I cannot comment except that I drive by it several times a week on my way to church and its in a nice, wooded area. There is a Waldorf School between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol that people seem to think is good, if you are into Waldorf. There is an excellent private school near Windsor called Sonoma Country Day School but it is expensive. As far as "progressive," you would probably get that in the public elementary schools in Sebastopol and probably other Sonoma County school districts. Good places to live? That's a broad question! It would probably be wise to connect with a realtor (online/phone) to start with, then once you have been introduced to areas, you could come back on this forum and ask more specifically. Generally, the housing costs are atrocious. Best wishes - I hope you get the position! It will be a big change but a fun adventure. Northern California has a lot to offer. And if you are liberal/progressive, you should be very happy here.
