I'm considering relocating to the San Luis Obispo area from RI. Anywhere within 45 minutes of Atascadero will be a possibility. I'm currently earning my HS teaching certificate to teach English and would like to begin my teaching career in CA. What are the job possibilities like for a first year HS English teacher? How does one get started when coming in from out of state? What are the school districts like in the area?

Pretty close to zero. California has an unbelievable budget crisis at the moment and pink-slipped 26,000 teachers in March. SLO County is one of the most desirable areas in the U.S. Correspondingly, it has one of the worst salary-to-cost-of-living quotients in the country: jobs pay poorly and are hard to find; real estate is extremely expensive. You should start your career in an area that has a more favorable salary-to-COL quotient so that you can accumulate some wealth over time. Then move to SLO County when you net worth is over 800k.

1. The most important thing is a good inheritance from a wealthy relative. $500,000 will get you started, but just barely. Even $1,000,000 is not a lot of money on the central coast.

2. Get a California teaching credential. Check the website of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for details.

3. Get a CLAD certificate. Not everyone passes this test the first time. All this paperwork takes a lot of time so start at least a year ahead of when you start planning to look for work.

4. Take the CBEST. For most districts, you will need to submit your scores with your application.

5. Make sure that you have your NCLB document from RI that certifies that you are a HQT. You'll need it to apply for jobs.

6. Check edjoin to start your job search. Welcome to EDJOIN!

This is the Credential Commission page about how to become a teacher if you did your studies and preparation outside California.
California Commission on Teacher Credentialing

For teaching high school if you prepared out of state you read this specific info.

This is a tough area to secure a job. Especially SLO HS or Morro Bay HS, the two HS within the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Virtually zero turn-over. Morro Bay High actually sits on ocean front property. NOBODY leaves that school. SLO County is a nice place to live.

So, yeah, jobs are super-hard to find. Can't comment on teaching jobs.

But I will say that housing has become more affordable (relatively). You could get a condo for 200k.

Hmm... buy a 2 bedroom condo for 200K, charge college kids $1000 per room a month to live there... you'd make a killing

I see a few 1-bedroom condos, and all upstairs.

Ahhhh, I just took a gander... they're all in that 'new' area on Broad by The Grad. Upstairs they're 1 bedroom apartments, downstairs are businesses. Vacant businesses, of course, because SLO has that nasty little habit of building new commercial sites that end up staying empty for years.

A friend of mine almost rented one of those places, but they're REALLY teeny tiny, and the LL was asking for $1400 a month.
