As I stated earlier, what I do find incredibly odd is this notion that people are actually going to leave the state for this reason. That doesnt make sense at all.
That reason alone wouldn't be worth it. The cost of moving to a cheaper state would require years to recoup the differences in taxes.

I think those are just added reasons besides housing costs and traffic. If housing costs and traffic were as low as in the other states mentioned in this thread, then I doubt people would be leaving. I certainly wouldn't have.

Yeah the "libs" are part of the problem but not the "repubs". It's always the "libs" fault right.

My husband and I travel alot and I am surprised at how many ex Ca. people we run into that say that it is the best thing they ever did. They say they miss certain things about Ca. but they are better off since they left.

Yep, that's the general opinion of the people I know who've left.

That's cool, I run into alot of people here from other states who say the same thing about where they came from. Especially Massachusetts and Florida .

The media makes out the budget problem to be bigger than it really is.

Furthermore, I hardly think that the state government's fiscal issues has much to do with the quality of life of most residents.

As far as Im concerned, its almost a non sequitur.

Have you seen the property tax rate in some other states? California is a haven by comparison. And as far as red ink-Oh, Im sure there is a more than one Northeastern state that could top us in that regard.
Yes Cal ranks 47 so there are 3 more states worse off. My advice would be don't go there looking for something better. But that leaves 46 that are not as bad off as we are.

I think even those kinds of property tax rankings underestimate what people pay. They use averages which factors in people paying $1000/yr because they haven't moved since 1980 and make the tax burden look lower than it is on anyone trying to buy today.

2 places not even on my list. You always have the option of coming back, but I don't want to spend the rest of my life thinking it could be better somewhere else. The state has continually gotten worse in the spend and tax situation. I wish I had hope that cuts would be made that would get us back on track but I guess I just don't believe the politicians are capable of doing that and the taxpayer will have to pick up the bill. Part of my problem is that as a family we never bought on credit and went without if we could not afford it and I would like to see the state run that way. I know it'll never happen. I guess I'm rambling...

That figure was for taxes in general not just property taxes. But yeah I get a little perturbed that my prop taxes are 5k and my neighbor with a bigger home is paying 2k

As we were sort of talking about in the San Jose forum, I think it depends on which parts of California we're talking about. It seems there are varying levels of complacency and disdain for the way things are. Maybe that's why Im so surprised by all the complaints from other parts of the state. The Bay Area is generally not as mad and angry as other places. At least that's my observation.
