New Jersey has a problem that doesn't exist in California, the whole state is secondary to something else. Nothing is primary in New Jersey.

South Jersey is generally a suburban extension of Philadelphia, while North Jersey is an extension of New York. The middle section just is minimally populated.

Cali should be divided into 3 parts too...
CaliFORNIA is the most diverse state in the country ... in terms of its' natural environment, geography, etc. and its' social/cultural landscape.
It's a very big and very populated state.
I don't divide it into 2 parts. But the difference between coastal So. CA and coastal Northern CA is clear and distinct.

Do the people in Northern California say that they live in Northern California? I know many of us in the Southern part of the state do say we live in Southern California. Not that Southern California is a seperate state or anything. I would say we are a diversified united state of California. Yes we have so many differant and unique sections of the state. It is a beautifull place to live. You can find anything here. We can grow nearly anything here. It is true that California Cows are happier here. Maybe that is part of the California lifestyle. We can do what we want all in the same day if we choose. Snow or water ski, surf, hike, sail, mountain bike, dirt bike, star watch in the mountains, star watch in hollywood, play a sport, watch a sport being played, race on the highway, or go see a race, if it can be done chances are we can do it somewhere in the state. In many cases we can do several of those things all in the same day.

Here's some interesting reading about the 51st state, Jefferson. It would occupy part of Southern OR and part of Northern CA.

State of Jefferson (Wikipedia)
Jefferson - the 51st State (secessionist website)

I'd venture to say that our divisions are much more apparent than New Jersey's. People across the nation know "Southern California" and "Northern California"...most people do not know where "Central New Jersey" is or what areas it includes. Our areas are much more defined and heavily used.
