We're looking to relocate from Sonoma County somewhere further up north or NE in California. We're concidering Shasta, Modoc, Lassen and Siskiyou counties. I was thinking of Redding in Shasta county, but wondering - are there any areas around there that are more upscale? Anybody have any suggestions for a nice place to live in any of those 4 counties?

"Upscale" is not an adjective that I associate with the State of Jefferson. I'm guessing that Redding is as close as you'll get once you're north of Chico (have you looked at Chico, BTW?) You obviously have some as-of-yet unmentioned motives/goals for your move that might shed some light on the best options. But really...there just isn't that much up there.

I'm just really tired of Sonoma county. Way too many people around here now. A lot more then there were 10 years ago when I first moved out here. Plus I want to live somewhere with 4 seasons but mild winter at the same time. Housing seems affordable as fas as buying a house up there...

If you want to go north, Chico is about upscale as you'll get. If you go to Shasta, Siskiyou, Lassen, Modoc, and anywhere else in that area, you won't get mild winters, you'll be snowed in. I would say that Chico is your best yet. I lived there for three years, and hated it, but I'm a big city person. Chico has the 4 seasons that you want, but it's a college town, and there isn't much work. Do you plan to look for a job when you get there? Chico is nice if you already have an income.

I live between Redding and Red Bluff and am pretty familair with all four counties you're researching. Also happen to be a City Planner, so I know a bit about the communities in the area.

Try looking at Palo Cedro. Its just east fo Redding on Highway 44. Its pretty rural, kinda "horsey", but upscale nonetheless. Its also essentially on the valley floor and so gets very little snow. Another option is Bella Vista, also east of Redding, but on Highway 299. It's actually nearby Palo Cedro.

Once you leave the northern valley you quickly gain elevation and lose the moderate winters. Siskiyou, Modoc and Lassen Counties all experience colder, mountain-type winters.

Good Luck!

Redding gets really, really hot in the summer. However, you can drive an hour to Mt. Shasta or , Lassen or over to Trinity. The whole area up there North of Redding is 4 seasons.

Mt. Shasta City has some nice upscale housing areas, but then no jobs to speak of. Unless, as Charles likes to say "I work at home in my jammies!"

It is a very nice area up there but kind of remote. My favorite has always been McCloud but it truly is rural.

Tells us more specifics and may we can zero you into a spot!

Redding is hot. Lots of cowboys. Much more conservative than Sonoma Co.

yeah, the only thing "upscale" is the temperature. Personally I like it up there, but I'm pretty much allergic to "upscale" in the economic sense.

If you're used to Bay Area weather you'll melt. Redding is the place where people from Sacramento say "it's way too hot up there!"

That being said, it is some pretty country, and it definitely has its charms. Upscale urban loft living is not among them.

There is no "upscale" here in the State of Jefferson. We prefer the low budget redneck lifestyle.
