Are you interested in the coastline? You could drive through the awesome redwood forests and work your way down along 101 through the coast, enjoy san Francisco, Santa Cruz and Monterey.

If you're in that area in mid-to-later Sept, you may really enjoy the Norcal Renaissance Fair outside Hollister (at Casa de Fruta). Check it out online.

From there I would trek over to Yosemite. Or vice-versa. All depends on which way you're going, I guess.

Sounds like an interesting trip.

To spare some writing ...

This redwood thread might be of interest:

Oregon Caves is roughly an hour from the far north redwood park in CA - Jedediah Smith redwoods.

Look up Trees of Mystery too.

Ah the beauty of Norcal!

Yosemite Park (if you've never been)
Wine Country Scenery (either the Sonoma/Napa area or the Calaveras/Amador areas)
San Francisco (Maybe a Baseball game, great stadium) (Any of the amusement/Museums)
Mendocino (Spectacular Coastlines)
Lake Tahoe via Sacramento (To see the state capital-educational for kids)

One thing about up North is the true diversity of topography vs the Socal region. Have fun!

Replied to your post in the other forum too:

I'd probably say:

- Pier 39, Golden Gate Park, and Alcatraz tour in San Francisco (a must see)
- Monterey Bay Aquarium (the wharf is great) and a quick visit to Carmel while you're there
- Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (not dazzling, but it's historic and the kids will probably enjoy it - I loved it when I was a kid)
- The Redwoods (Muir Woods would suffice if you can't drive all the way up to Eureka)
- Lake Tahoe (absolutely beautiful)

And if you still have time to spare:
- Yosemite (almost have to give this one its own trip)
- Old Sacramento and Railroad Museum
- Napa/Sonoma (more for the adults)
- a drive up (or down) the coast between Monterey and Half Moon Bay

Those are my favorite attractions.
